If some still think so, mentalities are however changing, and this in particular thanks to Diablo III. At the time, we even thought that a hack’n’slash playable on the controller was heresy. It is not for nothing that the acclaimed Diablo II was only released on this platform in 2000, thus refusing to do what its predecessor had done on PlayStation. Traditionally, these games are more affiliated with regular players and especially PC. But what is a hack’n’slash? Well, it’s a role-playing and action game inviting you to take part in fights against hordes of monsters, fights that will allow you to gain new skills and become more powerful in order to slay hordes again. If the genre was particularly illustrated thanks to Dragon Slayer: The Legend of Heroes (1984), it is indeed the Blizzard license that popularized and shaped it. It is notably thanks to Diablo that the hack’n’slash formula as we know it exists today. Diablo is one of those licenses that have deeply marked the video game landscape and imposed their mark on an entire genre. For more than 15 years, this mainstay of the video game world straight out of Blizzard’s ovens has enchanted players eager for wild action and rich lore. If you’ve lived in a cave for the past few years, you may never have heard of the Diablo license.
